Hopefully the normal quiz masters won't mind me slipping in a quick quiz.
"How many striking/blocking areas are there on the hand/wrist area"?
I can't name them all in Japanese so a rough description would suffice, i've been looking at a few books lately and may use it as a talking point in a lesson.
Maybe to make it interesting we could limit each answer to 2 areas rather than 1 person list them all? Maybe also wait for a couple more answers before you have another go. ;D
I will kick off with 2 of the most obvious:
1. Seiken - Straight punch using 1st 2 knuckles. 2. Uraken - Back fist strike

I've put them together in a list, there was a couple that I couldn't find or the spelling I had was different - hopefully i've not changed anything I shouldn't have. A lot of them are strikes as well as blocks, and as mentioned could be different angles. Also some of them are the same striking area but applied differently like Seiken and hook punch. Are there any more - I would have to cheat/google to attempt any more.....
1. Seiken - Straight punch using 1st 2 knuckles. 2. Uraken - Back fist strike 3. Shuto-knife hand or blade hand 4. Nukite (Yonhon)- "Standard" spear hand 5. Kumade – Bear hand 6. teisho – palm heel 7. Ippon nukite – 1 finger strike 8. Nihon Nukite – 2 finger strike 9. Nakadakaken Tsuki – Seiken with middle knuckle raised 10. Ipponken tsuki – Seiken with first knuckle raised 11. Haishu Uchi – back hand 12. Haito Uchi – ridge hand 13. Furi Tsuki – I think this is Seiken but with fist tilted back so the fore knuckles strike, half way to Hiraken 14. Otoshi Tsuki – downward punch? 15. Mawashi Tsuki – round punch 16. Kagi Tsuki – Hook punch 17. Kakuto uchi – top of wrist 18. Kake – shuto with wrist bent, hooking block 19. Hiraken – fore knuckle fist 20. Tettsui/kentsui – Hammer fist 21. Sieryuto – Ox Jaw hand 22. Tate – vertical shuto 23. Washide – Eagle hand, fingertips and thumb 24. Wanto uchi - ? 25. Uraken Uchi – back fist strike to front

Mal - your original question was "How many striking/blocking areas are there on the hand/wrist area"? Read more: ourshotokanstudies.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=quiz&action=display&thread=841#ixzz1tZh364WbMaybe you should have asked 'How many ways can one strike or block with the Hand/wrist area' as some of your list are not different areas on the hand/wrist but different ways of using areas of te Hand/wrist areas. they are actually seperate lists and either way both longer than your list if its content was placed in the correct category BUT great talking points that i am sure will get people thinking. Such a shame this stuff not generally taught as the full arsenal available to Shotokan Practitioners. Some of the items on your list refer to trajectory rather than impact point and some you haven't quite nailed but heyho that's what friendly courses are for

Yes, I was thinking as I put it together that it was wandering into being two or three lists. Things like Seiken strike area can be found in Oi Zuki, Gyaku Zuki, Ura Zuki, Kagi Zuki, Mawashi Zuki.... Then there are strikes and blocks When I learn about a subject I like to make a list of the whole lot and then I have an idea of what I have to learn, looking at the list so far then I think i've only ever practiced 14, some of them vary rarely. Another to add is Keito - Chicken Head wrist - using bent wrist and striking with the area at the base of the thumb, upwards into arm/armpit. I may split the list later and kick off another quiz. Any more strike areas?
