Has anyone watched this movie. It`s mainly Goju-Ryu, but some good karate here & kind of the good side & the dark side of how it can be used. At the end a quick show of Nijushiho, but mainly the kata seen is Sanchin. To view, just punch in on your computer `Kuro Obi english subtitles`& it should come up in 10 parts. About 90 minutes total.. Kuro Obi means- Black Belt

It was talked about a lot on other forums when it came out several years ago. The lead, Naka, is a JKA instructor. Although parts of it are pretty silly, it is one of the better movies featuring karate.

I looked for this movie in English for YEARS, and almost threw in the towel when I came across it on Utube and watched it all.
The Kata Nijushiho and Meikyo can be seen in the movie along with some Goju Kata.
It was pretty good actually, for a Japanese film. I say this as they have a different movie culture and things we find Campy they love and think makes mainstream sense.
For his part Naka Sensei showed a great amount of solid Karate to go with his acting and I really liked the film. It kind of left me thinking the writing was a bit unfocussed but that again seems to be like all the Japanese stories that I have watched. Unlike the west that has very linear story telling they kind of meander about the story and ask that you just "live in the film".
One of the films I saw was very well made, but basically about nothing. Hard to watch to be frank, but Kuro Obi was a very good movie for that style.

Managed to get it on DVD a long time ago and watched it a couple of times. Great film so long as you don't mind reading subtitles.

I've seen it but without subtitles so ended up fast forwarding through a lot of it and guessing the story, I was very impressed with the Karate as it wasn't the flying through the air with loud snapping punches and too much Kiai! I found a few of the first scenes very informative as the defence was a minimum type of move to avoid the massive attack, then a controlled and very powerful counter attack. Couldn't understand why they had a fight to the death at the end and still think the other one should have won...

With the subtitles on the master said "that kicking or punching your opponent" weakens your karate.
So at the end despite the lack of training he had been true to the masters training and in the ultimate test he won and I assume the one armed guy decided to give him the tatty old belt in the box.

The best Karate shown in a film by far is by Benny Urquidez in the Jacky Chan film, Meals on Wheels. Closely followed by Dragons Forever.

After reading this thread a few days ago, I watched Kuro Obi on Youtube - which is available as a full movie in a single piece nowadays, by the way. I found it very ordinary - too much "story", too little actual Karate! Except for the very beginning and the very end, there's not so much technique being showcased! On the other hand, the pointer by Dave B - BennyU in Meals on Wheels - now that is one stunning piece of Karate choreography! So many good steps involved, and some which can even be directly picked up for my own kumite practice :-) ______________ The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle.

The best Karate shown in a film by far is by Benny Urquidez in the Jac ky Chan film, Meals on Wheels. Closely followed by Dragons Forever. The best Karate film was enter the dragon. Jac ky cChan is a good performer but he deserves more to everything.
