I respectfully ask for your help guys and girls. As part of my research for a book I am trying to get an idea of the price of a karate class in -
a. 1970 b. 1975 c. 1980 d. 1985 e. 1990 f. 1995 g. 2000 h. 2005 i. 2010
I would appreciate you checking any records you hold or clear memories you have and letting me know. When you respond kindly remind me which country you are in as I suspect payment methods may have been different than here in the UK.
Thanks in advance.

In 1972 I paid my sensei $20 a month for 2 - 2 hr. classes per week. That went quickly to 5 classes per week & some classes were 5 hrs. long.
Thanks, Tom

First I`ll address the exchange. Way back when, the Pound was about $3.00 Now if my memory serves me well, prices in British Columbia Canada were as follows Year H/Q My dojo 1986 $40. $15 1990 $50 $20 1995 $60 $30 2000 $70 $30 2005 $85 $40 2010 $105 $40 This is of course CDN currency & I must say that at H/Q you can train at least 5 times a week In my dojo beginners twice & advanced three times weekly. I distinctly remember paying £3 a session back in 1999 - 2001. The child's fee currently stands at £4.50. Very reasonable as far as I'm concerned

From a small clubs point of view then £3 per child and £4 per adult is around average at the moment. A lot depends on the hire rate of the hall/room. I've gone to another club and been charged £3.50 for an adult but there have been many members, another outfit wanted £5, for smaller clubs the first hurdle is to cover the costs.
My senior instructors point of view is to mainly cover costs though as its not a money making task/hobby/sport for our lot.

I think I started long enough ago that money hadn't been invented yet. We paid in crops and game.

Okay, here is some interesting stuff on the "cost" of Martial arts and a real head shaker! We charge about 65 canadian for an adult to train with us on average (some clubs charge a bit more or less in our org) and we normally have between 10-20 adults in each club..with 35 bucks a month for kids and about 20-35 in each club..... I just asked a BJJ friend of mine how much they charge ext and he said to me that adults are about 150 and kids about 90 a month. they have about 30 adults and 90 kids depending on the time of year, often he says a class is full with 30 adults but their are roughly 60 that have signed up and paid for the FULL YEAR. WTF? I mean the economy is slow and we still see people paying that much to take a martial art that is pretty much only good on on one and or on the mats? ?
