I feel ashamed for not fighting them...
Any opinions?

Ask yourself the question, what does winning look like in that situation?
You obviously got away with your life... which given the circumstance was not a guarantee. So don't be ashamed...
Put is down as a life-lesson that probably cost you your phone and wallet (I hope that was all) and learn something from the experience.. Fighting three armed guys without a weapon and back-up is not a good strategy.. learning how to spot it prior to it happening, so giving you a chance to employ avoidance strategies, is on the other hand invaluable...

Ditto to what Thomas said, you always try to avoid these sort of situations but sometimes it just happens. Trying to fight because you have done some self defence is not always the correct action, staying alive is.
Funakoshi said something like don't worry about winning but try not to lose, losing your battle could have ended badly, walking away was the best ending.
Hope it hasn't shocked you too much, but at least you are still here to tell the tale....

Two people, one knife... this would have ended badly for you unless you were very lucky. I know it can be difficult to swallow your pride but no amount of money or possesions are worth your life. No shame my friend, glad you lived to tell the tale.

Connor,
In a case like this the smart man gives up his wallet and keeps his life! Like the others have said so well, what does winning look like here...in this case its being alive!
I have been in way to many fights to count and I can tell you that its better to be smart than it is to fight back and maybe give you a chance to walk away with out being hurt to badly, you can replace your wallet, your pride will heal...death...well that kind of ends everything.
The only time to fight back in that case is if the guy with the knife starts at you anyways. Then its fighting for your life, the difference is in realizing when all they really want is your wallet.

You were attacked by two guys with a knife and you're alive. You won.

Hi Conner
The other way to look at it is; you fought back blood everywhere knife sticking out of someone you are now in prison awaiting trial.
If you hang about no one is going to think you are a hero. The police normally arrest the one still standing and is your fault becuase of their poor home life or some other rubbish.
If you are still feeling ashamed look at what a knife does to someone, the pictures made me puke, did not realise that the skin could come off so much. Then cleaning up the blood there seems to be gallons of it. As it is not recommended to use touniquets any more stopping a major bleed is a nightmare "applying pressure". Then there is the infections that you get with blood about. I could go on....
Please do not feel ashamed, it is muggers who should feel ashamed.

Connor no amount of training can make you superman, facing one person with a knife is risky even for the best but two makes it impossible. Dont feel bad for giving them your stuff its better than the option of loosing your life.

To save yourself getting mugged again I would recommend reading Dead or Alive by Geoff Thompson.
One of the many things it will teach you is Target Hardening, which is how not to act and look like a victim, i.e. to make yourself a harder target.
Muggers are looking for easy targets, if they see someone who is switched on and aware they will leave you alone and wait for someone to come along that is switched off.

And if you felt scared at that moment, that is totally normal as well. This is not Hollywood. This is life, and 99% of the people in the same situation would almost piss themselves. You did the right thing.
