Mal, you nailed it on the head! You mean I said something worthwhile? ;D ;D ;D YAY!!! I hate the thought of trying to learn loads of Kata, wasn't it in GF book about him learning to read Poetry by reading the same poem 100's of times rather than loads of Poems only once? One of our guest BB once said not to fear someone who practices 100's of kicks but he who has practiced one kick a 1000 times. At the moment i'm trying to sort out Ji'in as the Uchi/Gedan are different sides depending on the org.

The thing we have to understand is that all kihon, kata and kumite are not set in stone otherwise we would all be practicing something totally different!
When we train with other groups/associations etc we are simply being offered an alternative option from what we consider to be our norm. We either embrace it or disregard it, surely that is what going to train with other groups is all about, if we come away with one new thing to work with then we are quids/dollar in etc.
Having said that I also have cross trained with several groups including Goju Ryu and they to this day still train in exactly the same way that they did 35 years ago. The point is that for someone who has NEVER trained with them WILL learn something new/different.
Best Regards Allan

I mean in 35 years no one has change a single move in a Kata, introduced a new drill or worked in some new ideas....how boaring! ;D

I think their thinking is why fix something that is not broken!! Best Regards Allan point taken. I actually prefer it when I am not made to make 20 tiny changes simply "because we said so" with little logic behind the move. Also, their are more than one way to shovel snow...but I like mine the best...or I like the way I have been doing Kata and as long as their are no major mistakes I will continue to do it the way I like it...even if its a bit off from the way others do it.

We even change in our own way of doing things. Sometimes without intention, it just happens. The way that I do kata as an arthritic almost 58 year old, is much different then when I was a show no fear, show no pain 40 year old.. Now there are times that I have to tell my students, that they should not copy certain things that I do & I`ll get one of them to demonstrate a more accurate picture. So sometimes certain things have been changed because that is the way they saw demonstrated & eventually enough people did it that way & it became the standard. Not realizing that the instructor may have been compensating for body limitations. Osu
