When Kano started using Gi's in the 30's cotton was state of the art.
My first Gi was light weight and easy to wash, had to keep tucking it in, the draw string jammed when wet and it stuck to me.
Next step was a heavy weight from Japan better fit, didn't stick to me, cold wet patches, hard to wash, took more than a day to dry so needed at least 2, built in snap, still tucking in and pulling up to stretch.
No the Gi isn't broke but there are new materials in the 21st century and training could be nicer.
Tech material with wicking technology. This draws the sweat away from the skin, no sudden temperature drops as the sweat collects and evaporates, you can train for longer as you are more stable. Washable dry in about an hour. I have complete range of movement do not have to keep adjusting and tucking in.
Goretex, light weight body armour so you can hit a bit harder without breaking ribs. Torsion pants so can move in all directions.
Nike are now doing under pants with which have "Pro Combat" in the waistband a must for any image aware martial artist.
Using modern materials can make your training experience a lot more pleasant and allow you to train for longer, we are trying to learn technique not just endurance.
There is a picture of the JKA in the 60's on a hiking trip and shock horror they are wearing hiking boots. Makes me feel really silly running 15 miles in bare feet.

There is really no reason to wear a gi, shorts & t-shirt are adequate. The only reason clubs persist with them as far as I can tell is so that the Instructor can make money selling them to you.

I would choose your words wisely, cos not all instructors sell gi's to make money mine certainly does not, a lot of instructors that run their dojo as a business/main income may charge extra for these!

A dogi is synonymous with karate so why wear anything else in a dojo environment?
Buy your own dogi and blame yourself if you get stiffed with the purchase price.
