One of my students and a great friend of mine just took a new job working up north (in Manitoba Canada) and had previously tested to Green belt (6th Kyu) with my instructor and myself. He had a pretty solid understanding of Karate and the JKA but not as deep an understanding as some of us would have.
So, he gets to work and in the first week meets up with this Russian gent that works on the drill team he was hired to be a mechanic for. He will be stuck 10 days on with this guy and 4 days off in the city so he took the guy out for coffee to get to know his new roomie. The conversation turned to Karate as my friend is trying to get back to Karate and wants to train his four days off at the clubs and then a bit no his own when not working at the camp. And the guys eyes get big and he says "I am a 4th Dan from Russia with an international teaching licence from the JKA"............Really?
So, My friend probes a bit deeper and the guy tells him he trained for a few months at the JKA head quarters in Russia and got his licence, which could be true if only he knew were the head quarters was, who the cheif instructor for russia is and who any of the JKA instructors are outside of Tanaka...whom my friend already had told him was one of MY favorites and idols in the JKA.
The story goes that the guy taught in Russia for years....did I mention he is in his late 20's....and that his instructor was the cheif for Russia...and again he could not give the guys name as he only knew him as Sensei.....and when he moved to Canada he would have had to give up his Dan ranking and start from scratch....Really.....so he figured he would just work till he could afford to open his own club.
So, scary point is he never contacted any instructors here...so I dont know where he is getting his "have to give up official JKA rank" and such, and the fact that we have never seen a Russian Dan rank member come to Winnipeg...and its a small place...we would have known about it...is a bit scary.
Then my friend asked him which Kata he liked best...his answer...Mawashi Geri! Not Mawashi geri no Kata which would have just made me think he was an Asai guy...no...Mawashi geri. Then my student asked him for pointers on Heian Yondan and he did not "remember" the Kata as it has been "FOUR YEARS" since he had trained....Dude....I have not done Gojushiho sho in a year and a half and I am pretty sure I could break out a fair to good Kata if asked...wait...yup remembered it!
I dont know why people have to lie about things and more to the point...who the heck believes these guys blindly?
