I apologize for being absent for so long but I got a new job 6 months ago & I have not had any time. I am going in for the surgery on Monday, January 26th. I know there are people (I did not say old) who have had this procedure done. Any advice on recovery will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, tom

Dear Tom
I hope all goes well. It seems to be no coincidence that so many people in Shotokan need hip replacements, cresent kick with astatic foot and not enough flexibility in the hip. I was lucky in that my joins blew up with fluid if I did not make a natural movement.
I spoke to a guy next door who has 2 plus a knee. Treatment in America seems to be better then the UK. His lasted about 10 years he has a very physical job. He says use the pain killers and do not be a hero with the pain. Build up slowly to get the strength back. Most people seem to go to physio a couple times a week, if you work on your own it seems to speed the prosesss up.
Hope all goes well and you have a speedy recovery.

I finally had it done, one week ago today. I am already walking with a cane. I am getting stronger by the day. I think my biggest challenge will be going slowly

Wow! It's exactly one month ago today that I had the surgery. I'm back in the dojo. Tonight we did boxing. I am doing kicks very slowly. I feel great!

I had both hips done 2 years ago. I feel great but take it easy on the kicking techniques and stick mainly to mae geri. On my favourite kata Nijushiho I replace the two side thrust kicks with fumi komi! I don't do mawashi geri or yoko geris anymore as I'm sure these are not good for your joints whether natural or artificial! Glad to see you're back in training. Paul Shephard

Sounds like good advice Paul. I am competing in the AAU State Karate Championships on 3/22 but I am just doing kata & kobudo. No kicking & no jumping.
