I have for many years been startled at the price of some training aids and have therefore spent time experimenting with home made equipment and am very willing to share my findings if anyone interested.
I also would love to hear about things you have developed.
Cheers

Going by the last two that you have shown us you have got me thinking, BTW the last one was just pure genius and we'll be using it in class sometime next week

Hmm, well once I get some thai pads, this is what I'm planning to set up: Basically, there's a tree in my garden with almost nothing around it and with a relatively thick trunk - so I'll attach one thai pad at just above knee height, the pad that I learnt to make from Steve at head height, and another thai pad at around chest height. Good substitute for a training dummy and a lot cheaper methinks

Have also made use of tennis ball on string for many years, great reaction training. I know this is a bit "Shaolin monastery" but for training for focus in choku-tsuki try putting out a lighted candle, stopping the punch about an inch from the flame. ( you need to remove gi top to exlude draught from clothing so not appropriate for class training lol)

Funny story about putting lights out. One of my students - Tommy Till - very tall and supple was practicing kicking at the Light shade in the middle of his living room ceiling - he misjudge one - got his foot caught in the Lampshade and pulled the lot out of the ceiling! tru story!

Here is a picture of my Bulgarian bag it's made from an old car inner tube some duct tape and sand weighs about 18kg or there abouts. But bloody hell it can work you if I had discovered this before kettle bells I would be $150 richer now. I'll try and dig out some youtube footage on how to use. [/img]

Andrew I saw it on your website looks really good, and hard work. A very versatile training aid that can give you a total body workout. Andrew you'll have to put down a detailed diagram of your inexpensive home made one

Andrew - to insert a photo you have to go to 'reply' not 'quick post'. Then go to 'Attachment' click on browse and search your pc files to find the photo you want to upload.

My makiwara pad was getting a bit worn and too close to wood for my taste. So of I trotted down to the local rubber shop and bought a piece of 225 x 100 x 40 'EVA' rubber I think it is too springy now as I just bounce off it. Means that I have to work harder to get the penetration. I can also feel the change in the way my body reacts to it.
Point I'm trying to make is that although the old pad felt as if I was getting everything right and 'felt' good. by changing the pad to something different it has exposed a weakness.
Beware of familiarity. I am going to get anther thinner pad so that I can vary the punching surface and dynamics every month or so.
Keep changing your routine every 4-6 weeks or so as your body adapts to the old .
