Free sparring. Not very often. Drill work - every Wednesday class.

unless a specialised Kata class I include some form of Kumite in every class - with seniors sometimes the whole class. Always with a theme of study to it - say Irimi or Unsoku. We should be very proud of Tom 103 years old and still mixing it up. I heard he does that Kobudo Stuff Fleur. Deadly with a Zimmer Frame and the steel rods out of the cllipers on his little legs! ;D ;D Way to go Tom and you know I am actually very impressed and often 'name' you when i have older students saying 'I can't do that anymore!

As of late I am doing alot of home training, I get out to the club as often as I can but we tend to do 1-5 step training a lot with the newbies and then 1 step and free style with seniors every class unless Sensei has us doing something different.
As I teach the adults most of the time (Sensei at 70 has figured he likes kids much better for teaching...likes the enthusiasm..and watching me torture the adults) so I get them doing 1 step and drills almost every class.
Personally when I go to the club (usually twice a week) I warm up with some Kata and then when students arrive I do kumite with them till class starts ( about 20-30 minutes). I love sparring with some people, but some are just to much of a bother to get interested in kumite with.

James - why don't you do five step with the senior grades?

I need to be more clear...as usual ;D With a class filled with white and yellow belts I would focus on Gohon kumite when doing kumite. For orange and green I would work Sanbon kumite, for Purple belt and up to 3rd kyu 1 step, brown belts normally semi free and lower level black light free. HOWEVER, I tend to mix it up alot, we have had yellow belts and purple belts doing light free style ext and so on. but it just a little bit and YES, I do alot of five step with seniors as well. I think its much like Kata, Black belts should be doing Heian Shodan as much as Sochin in my mind. I can not tell you how many times brown belts have forgotten Heian Sandan or Yondan and had to get my "Look"...which my mom taught me!

With us it depends on who's there and how many, last night for example we had a hall full of kids, mostly orange and white belts! It was a nightmare to try and keep everyone interested and organised so we concentrated on Kata and Kihon with a few self defense moves thrown in. Some are amazing to teach as they want to learn but others are more challenging!
Normally we do Kumite almost every lesson in some form.

Thanks for the clarification - I have a way of 'DOING' 5 step that Dan grades find very hard and taxing BUT love it! Get to a friendship course PLEASE! Hows this, 2013...INTERNATIONAL Friendship course in Sunny Winter...er Winnipeg Manitoba. All invited, the time and date depends on who is interested. Lets face it, Winnipeg is cheaper than New York, the Summer months mean sunlight from 6 in the morning till 9:30 at night. Cheaper booze and food and the cost of a hotel room is not much. If we pull it together I am sure Dingman Sensei would be happy to open it up to all the members of the OSS and we can gather for a great holiday training experience. I also have to say that Scott is in Brandon and I am sure he can make it here as well as not being to darn far away for anyone in North America seeing as we are the Exact Center of North America geographically. On a side nOte I can stay home with my daughter then and not worry about travel away from her. For those that dont know she is special needs and will be eight/nine in 2012. Wanna have a HUGE gathering, this is one way...and for some of you...it means a trip to the new world! Could be fun! Oh, and we have some of the best pubs outside of England I am told!

At least once every lesson. Some lessons we don't do it at all. But it's extremely enjoyable and good practice for the upcoming gradings.

More of a Kata man Then I would politely and respectfully suggest - Do more Kumite and Kihon then. I think most Instructors of any length of service would agree that most students will 'Favour' a particular area of training (perfectly normal but it is then your job to help them improve in and concentrate on, other areas to create the rounded Karateka that will ultimately be more efficient in all areas. I believe that it is your right to discuss the situation with your Instructor and his/her duty to then facilitate a more balanced carriculum for you. However, i also know that some Instructors have their head so far up their Jacksy that they would see that is a student 'questioning' their teaching skills and authority etc Anyway - if any probs create the balance by visiting other Dojo or getting together with some other students to work out together and help each other.
