Karate, today, lost one of it's finest, most courageous and dedicated Exponents with the tragic passing away of my dear and close and much loved and admired friend Arnold 'Tivvy' Gomersall.
I am heartbroken and devastated he has gone. We met at a Karate tournament 40+ years ago and have been close (if divided by miles in recent years) Friends ever since. I owe him so much as do his thousands of students at York Kenshinkan and York University.
I miss you so much my dear friend RIP Tivvy all my love
Steve Hyland.
I am literally in pieces with this news but will, later, tell you all about this astonishing Karateka and man: Tivvy Gomersall - Musician/Warrior RIP X

I'm sorry for your loss, and that of Karate.
A write up would be a fitting tribute to someone who has dedicated many years to Karate and it sounds like he was a good man.

so sad James that you and I were in discussion about you and your students travelling with me to train with him and his students - he woulda loved that and made you all so welcome - maybe we should do it anyway and hope they create 40+ yr friendships like he and I did?

Having met some of his students at Steve's course a couple of years ago, I can say that he must have been a fine, fine karate-ka and teacher. I feel like an 'osu' is appropriate. My condolences go to all that knew him.

maybe we should do it anyway and hope they create 40+ yr friendships like he and I did? First off I am so sad to hear another old timer is gone. They are so needed in teh swing of things right now. Also, a finer tribute to the charactor of a Sensei I can not think of. I would make a special camp of it and really remember him as a great instrcutor and friend.

Certain memorial ideas are being discussed James. Tivvy was not my Instructor, he was a team mate and MUCH more. One of those stalwart and very experienced Karateka that shone in so many ways. I will write something about him for this site but to be honest I am still too shook up at the moment. Go check my facebook wall and there is a short story that shows the quality of this man that i have posted.
I think we may do something in his name at the next Friendship Course. Thanks for your kind words James

A story about this great man: Tivvy Gomersall I worked for 20 yrs with children and young people whom had terrible and tragic backgrounds and as a result could be very violent or display dangerous behaviour BUT they were victims NOT criminals. One day something dawned on me - these children, growing up in the care system, would never have the experience of a holiday abroad - Social Services just ...would not pay for it - so they were doomed to grow as adults without the memories of the vast majority of modern children: a Holiday abroad. I decided to do something about this but knew I had to raise the money somehow. I rang Tivvy and explained. He simply answered: 'Leave it wi'me! Then for several years Tivvy and his marvelous Band/s 'Stealer' and'Aynt Skynyrd' would travel to Somerset, all sleep in tents on the land around our house and then give a free concert at a local Hall to help me raise the money to take the kids abroad. they raised thousands with no ask for even expenses! Brilliantly Tivvy and Jane (at there own expense) actually came on one of the holidays with all the staff, carers and the Kids. Brilliant. The photo is Tiv and I with our lovely Wive's - Jane and Rachel just before one of the Bands fantastic concerts for us. I owe them all so much but am so glad Tivvy responded to my cry for help with 'Leave it wi'me'. the Kids loved those holidays and will remember them all their lives. Thanks Tiv and the Gang! Sorry folks - I am visiting my eldest Daughter - don't know how to load one of my photos from here so will put it in when i get home

I just found out about Tivvy - very sad news indeed. As a young lad, I trained at Kenshinkan with Tivvy as one my instructors. It was a pivotal time for me and Tivvy took me under his wing and was really a great inspiration to me. I went as part of a team to a few comps (like when went to Liverpool and I got thumped . I have very fond memories of Tiv especially his great stories at the Gym Crack pub in York (where I loved to go after training for copious pints of coke). I can still see his face and grey curly hair as he recounted a few scrapes he'd been in and working at the railway. I remember a motorbike in a state of being rebuilt in his front living room and thinking that was living dangerously. But, he always looked after me (and everybody else) and I was proud to have trained under him and been his friend. My middle son now trains (with George Best, no less), so I like to think that some of the good karma instilled in me by Tiv lives on.

Several of you have asked me 'when I shall post more information about my dear departed friend Tivvy Gomersall?'
The truth is I have sat down and tried to put something together several times but his loss is still so raw and painful for me that I just can't do it justice. So please accept my apologies and kindly be patient as his story IS very much worth the telling and the hearing but I want it to be worthy of him so shall wait a while until I can do it justice.
I will write it I promise.
OSU!

Youth Youth that rides the wildest horse, Youth that throws the deadliest steer, Spending strength without remorse, Grappling with the ghosts of fear, Knows it only holds to-day All it freely flings away.
Youth that rides a race with Death When the frightened cattle break, Living in the moment's breath, Risking all for honour's sake, Lightly knows it holds in fee Life and immortality.
Age that rides the spavined grey, Age that seeks the safest track, Scenting perils by the way, Dreaming of the journey back, Leaves behind it all the truth Known to the wild heart of youth.

No worries, as I am getting older I am seeing many of my Sempai leaving us and it is a bit distressing. I lost a very influencial senior a bunch of years back to Cancer.
Its sad to see such good Karate people passing, but its the way we were designed. Bruce Derraugh was his name and he had crazy good sparring ability and was one of the nicest guys you could meet. I knew him from when I was a little kid and he always showed such class.
We all can remember those that passed and those that have left Karate with fond memories, but its not the same as strapping on a gi and Obi and having at er!
Thats why its so damn important to be humble, teach those that are coming up all we know and pray they go beyond that and pass even that on to to their next in line students.

I live in Canada now and have just found out about the terribly sad news of Tivvy's passing. Whilst I know it has been a few months since Tivvy went to the great dojo in the sky I felt compelled to write a brief epitaph to the truly wonderful bloke that Tivvy was. I trained under Tivvy from '83 to '89. My memories of Tiv were many but a few stand out. Always fun to be with: Tivvy winning individual Men's kumite final at Keele University circa '86 with of all techniques...... a mae geri! ( Tivvy preferred his fists, it's fair to say!) and the lap of honour after the ippon was awarded which went right round the hall.....many times. The night in a pub in Bridlington after the tri club tournament with Steve Thompson's club and an impromptu gig with way to much rock n roll juice been consumed.
Oh yes and the motorbike in the front room and the trophy from Keele in the front window that negated the need for curtains as it was so bloody big!
Tivvy you were the inspiration for my time at the Kenshinkan and I join in with the praise for for how brilliant you were as an instructor and a person.
Scotty.

It sometimes amazes me on how small the world can be. Here we have a new member who lives about 3 hours from me, who trained under a well respected karateka in the U.K. that a lot of you knew. Hi Scotty; do you still train, we have a shotokan dojo in Vernon, if you are interested. It sounds like you have some interesting history. Welcome aboard..
Oh & if you could sign your name with your posts please. Osu
