...and I'm an alcoholic... oops, sorry wrong forum! No, actually I'm not, but I do have a confession to make. I'm not a Shotokan practitioner, although I have dabbled in the odd lesson before now. I started in Wado Ryu as a kid, then had a go at Taekwondo for a while as a teenager. I first had a go at Shotokan under 'Smilin' Bob Rhodes when I went to university. Since then I've dabbled in a number of arts, but found my spiritual home in Okinawan Shorin Ryu, which I now teach in Leeds, UK. I thought I'd give this forum a whirl at Thomas' suggestion. So blame him if I express any contentious opinions. I do however promise to always be polite. Mike

Hi Mike
Welcome to the forum. Just visited your website which looks great with lots of information.
I have also trained with Terry Wingrove at one of his seminars in Wigan some years ago which was organised by Bob Carruthers and also meet Alan Ruddock (one of Vernon Bell's original students) who actually introduced Shotokan in Ireland before taking up Aikido.
I sampled the Liado and Aikido and was lucky enough to be in some of the photographs on Terry's website. Great experience to meet like minded martial artists who are prepared to share their knowledge. Some great senior instructors from many disciplines attended.
Best Regards Allan

Hi Allan, thanks for the welcome. I have also trained with Terry Wingrove at one of his seminars in Wigan some years ago which was organised by Bob Carruthers and also meet Alan Ruddock (one of Vernon Bell's original students) who actually introduced Shotokan in Ireland before taking up Aikido. That may have been one I was at, about 2006/2007 or so? I also enjoyed training with Tony Christian in Goju Ryu that day, a very good session and he had some good students there. Sadly, Alan Ruddock passed away recently. I can't say I trained with him a huge number of times, but I got something out of it every time I did. He was a good teacher and a very humble, self-effacing person. I enjoyed talking with him and hearing about his experiences as much as I enjoyed training with him. Mike

Hi Mike
It was August 2006 at Robin Park. Tony Christian had some great training sessions at his Goju Ryu dojo in Shevington, people from many disciplines turn up and he would ask them for ideas which would become the basis of his class. Sadly the club closed down a few years ago. Although I am Shotokan through and through I have always trained with anyone who had an open mind and meet many of his students over the years who had local dojo's and made you so welcome. I remember teaching Bassai Dai at Martin Phillips dojo many years ago which was an amazing experience for me going on the students feedback.
Alan Ruddock is mentioned so much in Dr Clive Laytons superb books and his passing is such a shock. Such a gentleman who having trained in Shotokan for many years changed to Aikido and made his Art look and feel so simply, relaxed yet awesome.
During my cross training with other disciplines I came across another gentleman named Marion Mucha who lived near to me who was responsible for possibly 99% of Aikido in Lancashire. His demonstrations were simply amazing.
Best Regards Allan

Welcome to the forum Mike, it would be good to hear points of view from someone who has trained in other styles.

Welcome to the forum. I like your website. Interesting to see an adult only class. I wish I could train with adults only!

Welcome to the forum. I like your website. Interesting to see an adult only class. I wish I could train with adults only! And as soon as I have enough adults attending to cover the rent I'll let you know. Teaching kids isn't my thing, but it occurs to me it would have some advantages. Mike
