Hi. I always wondered why there aren.t people wearing black gi, I mean, I should have a special grade for it or I can choose what to wear, a white one or a black one?

There are some clubs that wear black gi's. Some wear them to be different, some only allow the blackbelts to wear them. Then, there are some clubs that wear blue gi's!

I always thought that a black top and white pants or the other way around looked really cool! However, I still wear all white...thus proving...I am not very cool! LMAO!!!

I think you'll find that a white gi is cool. I wear a white gi which IS cool, due (I assume) to the fact that it's ME in it It's not what you wear it's how you wear it. Don't get me started (again) on the two teenage lads who turned up at grading with their gi waistbands below their backsides in an attempt to look cool (did make me laugh though).

To answer the original question however. Whilst in reality it doesn't really matter what you wear (just needs to be comfortable, allow freedom of movement and be robust enough for the training) it's generally accepted that "traditional" karate training is done in a white Gi. It basically comes down to the club or dojo you train at, if everyone else is in the standard white gi then they probably wouldn't be keen in you turning up in a black one (or any combination of the two), if some people are in black and others in white it may well be a grade thing, I have seen groups where the instructors wear a different colour gi. Simple way, just ask at the club where you train what their dress code is

Trained in a hall many years ago where we often finished the session with a black Gi. Floor was always filthy!
