Hi, looks like I have the opportunity to try out kendo next week. Does anyone have any experience of kendo? Some of it looks great on youtube but I can see a lot of practice, repetition, practice, repetician, practice and some repetition. Ha Ha. checked out some stuff on the net and their seems to be a lot to learn.

Great fun Alan give it a go...it led me on to iaido and many other Okinawa weapons. Much more physically demanding than you would imagine.

A) if you get distracted and board easy....I pitty your time in Kendo...tones of repetition.
B)If you need your arms for anything for the first few weeks...find an alternative. Your forearms will be toast!
Its fun, but very trying on those that dont have great patience.

Indeed - kendo training is really composed of kihon, partner practice and only later free- bouting. You will spend a lot of time swinging the shinai, yelling, and more swinging of the shinai, occasionally running at the senior student and whacking them with it while you yell some more, and then doing lots of kiri-kaeshi (repeatedly wacking your senior's shinai while you yell while running). Aerobically, it's intense, and your grip will definitely develop <evil grin>.

Just got back from first kendo lesson. Great fun but felt a bit weird. Not keen on the very, very long kiai's but enjoyed wacking people with a stick! Look forward to next weeks lesson.

Thanks for posting the link Neil. Nice documentary. Have checked out some good stuff on youtube and had a practice in the garden. I bought a bokken six years ago for some reason and rediscovered it in the garage.
