Just been looking at a thread on " The practical application of karate" forum. Someone who says he is looking to improve the strength of the joints in his fingers. Now I am sure I read somewhere that there are no muscles in the fingers, only in the palm and forearm (in relation to the hand) so surely the finger joints cannot be strengthened just the supporting musculature and tendons? Or does anyone know differently?

Hi Jim
Part of the "traditional" warm up involves opening and closing the fist. In turn it is twofold, one involves contraction and expansion to exercise ligaments/tendons etc and the other is to perfect the clenched fist for both punching and gripping.
Best Regards Allan

Yeah I understand that Allan and the need to warm up the hands but specifically the joints of the fingers and specifically strengthening them? Not sure how you strengthen the joint, just its supporting structures.

I would be very interested if you can strength joints as I able to dislocate them unpleasently easily and all I can do is strengthen the muscles and tendons around them to keep them in place.
Did all the usual pressups on the fingers and found if I do finger pressups followed by fist press ups the joints in the fingers really hurt so I do not mix them.
I find the "Grip master" from Go doors climbing section really good to improve grip and finger strength. Blue, red, black if you like colour progress.
