Tonight we were doing Kizami Mae Geri. From left Kamae, we took a half step forward, and kicked Mae Geri with our front (left) foot. Now my question - in which position should your hips be : Shomen as in normal Mae Geri, or in Hanmi as in Kizami Tsuki ? My thinking is Shomen, but it wasn't mentioned in the class.

My guess is since it is "kizami", the hip is slanted, as if you were doing front leg front kick from back stance. Kizami-zuki after all is with a slanted torso.

Hamni allows you to extend the hip, to help drive into the target. We pretty well use the combination on Kizami geri & Mae gei as a open hip, close hip exercise the same way as Kizami zuki & Gyaku zuki. Nice warm up for hip rotation..

I was going to guess at Shomen..... Whenever i'm stuck with a similar question I try to drill both and see/feel which is better and then use them to hit something and see which gives more power. Thinking about it though I seem to remember seeing it in somewhere like Best Karate where it was hanmi...

I would go with Shomen or a natural hip position. The problem with an overtly Hamni hip position and mae geri is that it results in the supporting leg and knee pointing at right angles to the direction of attack, this I think is quite unbalanced and If you have got slightly dodgy knees it can put unpleasant strain on them too.
