Has anyone ever looked at the lineage of Karate on Okinawa, I have written out a chart for all instructors from Funakoshi's generation Back to the start of Okinawan Karate and even the chinese instructorst that taught people like Chatan Yara and Higashionna Kanryu....DANG NAB IT if its not a confusing Knot of lines. Some people like Moden Yabuki and others had one or two instructors, then some like Chotoku Kyan had way more and some from Shuri Te and some from Tomari Te....Man its hard to follow!Fun, but hard!

I've seen attempts at it but never a comprehensive family tree.
I'd love to see it.

I found one!
Rob Redmond's free kata book has a small diagram covering the main lines of learning.
Interestingly there were only 4 people who trained through both nahate and shurite lines, at least in theory.
It might be worth having a look and comparing.

when I am done I will scan it and send it up. Its interesting and really is a bit of an Irish Knot! I find it interesting how a hand full of people did both Naha Te and shuri and some did Shuri and Tomari. It seems that Tomari was kind of absorbed into Shuri as well. Again, interesting but the lines will make you squarly.

I'd be interested in seeing that as well.
