"From Shotokan to the Street" by Andi Kidd. Book is available via Lulu or on Amazon. This is an interesting book, whilst it's not intended to be a "how to" book (in as much as it's not a list of techniques) in many ways it is. It is an ideal read for anybody with any level of training who is looking to transition from the "classical" arts to a more pragmatic/applied way of training. It is not a zealot's book regarding self protection over traditional training and freely acknowledges that people train for many reasons. However it does chart the author's personal journey to the "dark side" and offers a wealth of useful information on how to make that transition if that's what you are looking for, what is important to know regarding the whole arc of self protection (over and above just the physical skills), how to modify and adapt your training to those ends and how to actually achieve your goals. It is written in a friendly an easy to read manor and I would heartily recommend it to anyone in martial arts (not just specifically Shotokan, the author's chosen style).
