Hello to you all!
My name is Cristina, first kyu in Shotokan. I started karate many years ago in Italy, where I was born, then had to give up - 4th kyu then - when I moved to Greece (22 years now). About two years ago I discovered a small, new Shotokan dojo here in town (not many options here) and started training again. I'm struggling with my deficiences, my age (50, in six months) and my attempt to gain a deeper understanding on karate. Love it immensely, though, difficulties and all. Hope to learn a lot from you all, your posts are very useful to me.
Best regards, and good training, Cristina

Hello Cristina and welcome, Glad you are enjoying you time in Shotokan. There are a lot of well informed people here and if you are looking for understanding this is a good place to start. I think you'll find a number of us here are struggling with the same deficiencies (and more) but it's never too late to learn. (and you are never too old to have fun!)

Hello Cristina & welcome to OSS. We are all trying to go further in our understanding of karate, so your input & questions will be most appreciated. As Bob mentioned there are some well informed people here, however trust me when I say that we can become more informed by looking at things through the eyes of others. So good questions cause us to think deeper & thinking deeper causes us to learn more. Good stuff all around! You say that you were a 4th kyu when you stopped training years ago & in the last 2 years you progressed to 1st kyu. It would seem to me that you are overcoming the deficiency challenge quite well. Good for you! Keep training & these challenges will become minimal. Myself, I am 55 with knees that are older than the rest of me & arthritis trying to invade my joints, but karate is most certainly giving me a chance to not give in & enjoy an active lifestyle. So at the age of 50, I firmly believe that you have been doing your body a favour by training in shotokan. You don`t have to look to far to see people middle age or older & realize what a gift being able to move well as we get on in years can be. Osu Paul B
