Budo?

there is no doubt in my mind that the Competitors shown here are athletic, fit, supple and skilled but IMHO it is not Budo. the histrionic and boastful displays ON the area ( i have no objection to celebratory cheers and physical outflow once you leave the mat) are not what i was taught and still believe Budo Karate is about. It would take little to tidy this up but when you see it from members of the Japanese national team i fear it may be too late - a sad development and i am surprised that the Seniors in charge do not see it as so.

Yah, sorry....to much in the ring for my liking. Get excited by all means, but keep the respect and honor in your behavior till after you leave the ring...And for Gods sake thank your opponent before turning into a major bone head! If not for them...you would be doing Kata!

yes James - Yokota Sensei's comments in his interview demonstrate the change in attitude.

To much playing up to the crowd. What is with doing `kiai` for 10 seconds after the point is scored & walking away. Enticing the crowd?? To much emphasis on winning! Even in the UFC they bow to the beaten opponent, shake hands, hug or something. Osu Paul B

I have watched the video again and again and the more i do i am finding a major conflict =
I see incredible skill not doubted, not questioned = truth!
but then i see other things that literally make me go oh dear! this aint good!
Am i being old fashioned or am i correct - cos i think that with small effort it could all be sorted.
any comments or ideas?

Drifting off topic here but I see the attitude difference amply demonstrated in the difference between football (soccer) and Rugby Union, both are sports and entertaining (apparently ), both successfully draw the crowds, both require a lot of hard work and skill to achieve the top level but the attitude of the participants is totally different. For both winning is the aim but there the similarities seem to end. One still holds to the old fashioned values of respect, discipline and sportsmanship (at least currently) and has participants who are totally committed to their sport and show very much what I consider the "budo" spirit (as far as it can be applied to any sport). No excuses are made, or sympathy asked for, at the end of a game, you just do your best then (win or loose) get on with fixing what ever need fixing before next time. The other is football and there's little more to be said than that. (Yes I'm aware that this post is, in part, an excuse to air some of my predjudices ) Do we want to see competitive karate follow the football or rugby model if it is to be considered a sport at all?

My 'her indoors' is a teacher.........her school is twinned with some Japanese town (the name of which escapes me). The Japanese kids gave a demo on kendo. They explained the points system and rules i.e. you get so many points for striking the head, body leg wherever............also points are deducted for 'unbudo like behaviour'. Any cheering or jeering = lost points. Worth a look

Do you get all this stuff in Kata competitions as well then Kensei? I will do as much as i need to do in practising Kumite, but much prefer Kata, you don't?. Whether Kata is more 'Budo' in essence compared to Kumite i have not yet the experience to know, but i am learning--slowly!

This epitomises everything I detest about modern kumite. Showboating, the exaggerated withdrawal of gyaku zuki back to the hip to attract the attention of the ref and the granting of ippon for an ura-mawashi geri that bounced off uke and had no discernible effect. It is neither Budo nor in anyway impressive.

You do get all this showboating and crazy stuff in kata...actually some styles are even worse....Really Worse! I think that both are equally important in training In Budo. The Kata should lead the way to Kumite and Kumite should give back to your Kata training.
