Have you ever wondered exactly what happens at the point of impact when your punch lands - Take a look at this perfectly timed photo of the split second after a Gyaku tsuki hit roofing tiles. The (awarding winning) photographer did it in one take and it was in the pre-digital age. What I like about it is the fact that you can see that basic karate punches can and will crack ribs and do considerable damage and that the Karateka's hands can be forged into weapons that will inflict this kind of damage with no damage to the puncher! Enjoy! Attachments:

and now for the grin for you all - the karateka was me in 1983. ably assisted by one of my students - Tommy Morris Shodan. the award winning professional photographer was my elder brother Billy (more famous for his photo's of top level golf tournaments and Rugby League matches). he took the photo in one take and caught it perfectly. Please note the trendy highlights in my hair (it was the 80's). Poor Tommy did get a little injured - we didn't quite think it through and the larger pieces of tile fell and cut the top of his feet quite a bit - sorry Tommy . If you look at the enlarged photo you will see that pieces of tile flew a good distance in an instant! We used the photos in an advertising drive for a new full time Dojo I opened. Funny thing is - apart from this shot I only ever did breaking for a Finale at Demo's (because Joe public kinda expected it and loved it) - it was not something I practised at all and in fact would accept an argument that in fact it has little to do with Karate training. Anyway - I hope you find the shots interesting and I shall await the acid comments about me having hair in those days and a very different waistline LOL! Attachments:
