Do any of you ever use the method of forming a fist whereby the index finger is not completely folded into the palm but compressed by the thumb at its first joint. I think this is illustrated in Karate-do kyohan ? I have tried this for use against the makiwara and found it surprisingly stable and makes it easier to maintain the 70-30% ratio of contact between 1st and 2nd knuckles but is very difficult to form quickly and instinctively.

Trained with one guy years ago, who did this method. He was with Oshima`s group SKA. Oshima was the translator for Kyohan, so some of his methods are in there. Have played with it a bit, but like you could not feel good with it done in a hurry. Good to play with though, in case arthritis sets in or maybe a sprained or broken finger.. Osu Paul B

Well I did not know that, thanks Fleur. took a further look at this and definitely makes a more compact fist.
