they are for creating a solid, balanced and stable base from which we can launch our techniques BUT - sadly misunderstood - they are transitory in form and should only be evident for the split second (for the vast majority) time they do their Job and should then dissolve as we move to the next most positive position relevant to what we wish to achieve. they ARE NOT SEATS TO SIT IN!

Well said Steve! I always tell my students, `stances are what we pass through, not hang around in`. I appreciate your description as it re-enforces what I`m trying to describe. Osu Paul B

I certainly did! My own take on this broadly agrees with you both but I would say primarily they are vehicles for loading body-weight into a technique ( there are others like positioning and evasion etc.). Have always thought stance was misunderstood, we transit through many stances when we flow through techniques and static stance practice is more a snapshot of how that should be performed rather than the beginning or end of a technique.
