I will be hosting an open session at my hall in Croxley Green, Hertfordshire on Tuesday 13th November 8:00 - 10:00 (ish) There will be 3 instructors running short sessions offering a variety that may (and I stress only may ) be outside the scope of your day to day training but the main aim is to promote the idea of free exchange of ideas across groups and to train with others outside your usual circle (but mostly to have a bit of fun!). Just bring you Gi and an open mind Places will be limited (due to space constraints) so let me know if you want to come and I'll send you directions. This will be a free session but there will be a "donation" pot at the end for the support of a local charity (TBA) if anybody wants to contribute (this is entirely voluntary BTW)

All set for next week! Don't know if I can bring anything new but always look forwards to training.

I would be happy to organise something along these lines too come the New Year. Would anyone be wiling to travel to the Northeast of Uk, specifically the Sunderland area?

Hi Bob I may be working in Hemel next week, so it is conceivable that I could make it... Although it is fully dependent on my work schedule Anyway who are the instructors? and ideas what is going to be covered? Cheers Tom

Hopefully you can make it Tom. I'm in Londidno on a works training course.
I think we came up with the idea of rotating instruction with the general goal of sharing knowledge/styles and hopefully learning something new. If nothing else just having a good training session.
I'm an extremely new instructor so doubt if I can add anything other than good intensions, but willing to throw a few things into the cooking pot.
The idea of hosting these open sessions aound the UK (or anywhere) is a good one, hopefully we can get a few more going.

Hi Tom, I wouldn't get over excited too excited too soon. No big names (or even medium size ) Instruction will be handled by myself (3rd Dan KASKA) Brian Bates (3rd Dan BKI) and Mal King (1st Dan, I think). Subject matter will cover: Knife THREAT defences (an introduction to Jeff Nash's techniques as it's been recently discussed). Advanced Kihon, blocks as strikes. Speed drills (possibly) and time permitting a reprise of Asai sensei's Junro Shodan (and/or Nidan). These will be fairly short "introductory" sessions as we only have a 2 hours slot but it's as much about getting people together and seeing how they train rather than an "advanced" learning opportunity. Trying to get a ball rolling and set a precedent as much as anything else at this point.

...and time permitting a reprise of Asai sensei's Junro Shodan (and/or Nidan). Although I am glad not to have to go over the Junro's... personally can't stand the kata's . Andre Burtel had an interesting article about why Asai created them (all do to with trying to teach "western Karateka" to loosen up and not be sooo stiff). What is funny is going onto Youtube and watching how they are now being performed... all stiff with far too much kimae... I am still plumbing the depths of the Heians, don't really want to learn another set of kata's that are designed to teach me something I don't have a problem with...

Baring in mind that the dojo is about 400m from one of the best "ale" pubs in Hertfordshire (always 8 different ales on tap) learning how to loosen up is not much of a problem

Great time last night, thanks Bob for hosting!
We were only a few but managed to "knowledge share" some great stuff, I learnt a lot and was glad that I was able to bring something to the group, it will encourage me to keep learning and I was able to potentially disgard a couple of applications that were not that effective.

Hi Mal, thanks for taking the time to come out to see us, and sharing your stuff with us (like I said before, a different viewpoint always opens up new avenues . Last night was not what I'd hoped (but pretty much what I expected ), a couple of late drop outs didn't help but life catches up with all of us sometimes. Sorry the group was so small but I think we all gained something from it and I had fun. I think I need to make the effort to go up and train with Brian occasionally
