...and am thoroughly p*d off!
It went like so:
Kihon
I have no idea how or why, as kihon is usually my worst area (relatively speaking of course) thanks to long legs and thus normally slower movements than smaller people, but everything seemed to come together - I was surprised at how powerfully and accurately I managed to execute some techniques!
Kumite
Okay, so it was one attack sparring. My opponents first attack, an oi-zuki jodan, was a hell of a lot quicker than I expected, and my age uke was a split second too late, and had I not moved out of the way, I probably would've been walloped in the face. At this point, I honestly thought that my kumite would be failed because of this, although minus that fault, I was pretty much as close to perfect as I was going to be from that moment forwards...
Kata
Tekki Shodan. A kata that I have obviously spent hours and hours and hours practising. More than any other kata, I've really felt myself be absorbed by this one, as my legs have actually been an advantage to me as opposed to being a hindrance because of their length... Amongst other things as well and to cut a long story short, Tekki Shodan has really resonated well with me.
So, I announced my kata and took Yoi, ready to perform the best Tekki Shodan they'd ever seen a 6ft2 4th kyu perform...and thankfully, it went very, very well! - or so I thought -__-
So I finished the kata, and waited for the examiners to let me go. I then heard my name called.
"Alex, can you make Kiba-dachi for a minute please"
I knew for a fact that my kiba-dachi was probably one of if not the best in the group of people that I was grading with - and there were a lot of people whose stances were a lot worse than mine anyway. So I made kiba-dachi, ensuring that it was as good as it was ever going to be, and stood there a little confused.
"Make uchi-uke and the 2 moves that follow"
So I did, and the examiner proceeded to show me how I was in fact both misplacing my gedan-barai (the one before nagashi-uke), and beginning it in the wrong place. Now, I was perfectly happy to be told how to improve my kata, and of course I was thankful for the criticism. But I was left horribly confused as to why this hadn't been picked up on over the last 4 months of training in which I'd been doing the kata in the exact same way. I in no way blame my Sensei (plural), as they always pick up on small things like that; which ultimately means, that since my last training session, I've managed to forget part of the kata; which has left me horribly horribly confused - especially as after doing the movements I'd done wrong correctly, the examiner proceeded to tell me that I'd performed the kata very well and extremely precisely, especially for a tall person :S
So, in the end I did of course pass, but as I was told this, I was also told the following:
Kumite - Excellent! (?!?!?!?! I was nearly hit in the face because of my own silliness :S)
Kihon - Very good! (fair enough )
Kata - Just good (I'm sure I don't need to explain again why I'm annoyed at this :/)
All I can say now though, is bring it the hell on! Next time, I'll give them the best semi-free sparring and Bassai-dai they've ever seen from a 3rd kyu
