Wow, what went south quick..... You're obviously not talking about the flightless birds going south.... There's no rule about not using the odd funny comment, or any reason to get arsey about it. I'm still digesting Toms great reply about the 26 Kata so can try to steer it back to Karate soon...

2 man drills would hav[e] probably done just as good...but why not just teach people basics a specific way and then kumite drills? Kata for me are "homework" - the dojo (and your dojo-mates) are too valuable to waste time just doing polishing work on performance art. Yes, you have to come to the dojo to learn a kata (and its individual techniques), and yes, you have to come to the dojo to test (via applications) your understanding of the kata, but actually just doing the kata repetitively is mainly for you in your own place, imho. So the majority of time in the dojo should be taken up with 1) learning how to do technique, and 2) actually working with partners (or equipment) that you do not have access to at home. Thus, kihon and kumite, with the kumite based on extracts from kata. Kihon is further refined by hitting things as an instructor checks you so you avoid injury and actually become proficient. So I do not see the quote above as being dichotomous with kata, but in fact what should happen in the dojo (mainly).

26 kata? Enough or too many? IMHO both.. As I approach 30 years of training Shotokan Karate I still don`t know all 26 kata. I think that I have followed Nijushiho sho & Wankan maybe once or twice each. A few statements here that I agree with. Yoshitaka & others were sent to learn more kata from other masters. Yoshitaka was very instrumental in adding to the basic 15. I think that the style of learning changed big time from having to sneak off in the night to visit your sensei in Okinawa, to having the freedom to train all you want in Japan. So they were exposed to the basic 15 much sooner & people like Yoshitaka weren`t satisfied & wanted more. The number 26 is a coincidence & who knows what would have happened if he would have lived to influence Shotokan for another 30-40 years. For me some kata are too hard on my old body now & rarely get done. Gankaku, Kanku sho & Unsu for example. The jumping & dropoping down to the knees is to hard on this old body. `Ive fallen & I can`t get up`... So it`s nice to have choices, like Sochin ( which make my knees feel good ) & Nijushiho or Gojushi dai for example. The 20 kata that I do have all that I need & to be truthful if we are going with the goal of perfection of technique, well I most likely won`t get there in my lifetime. There are a few kata that it doesn`t take long if I don`t do them regularly, then I have to go back to the book or video for reference to get through the first couple of time. Much like James was saying about memory. 26 is too many for me, but has been nice to have a few to work on when others became too difficult do to the body not cooperating. Personally I can`t see needing more than that as I`ll never get proficient at all the ones that we have at our disposal now. I do also agree with Elmar on kata being on effective tool for home work. We don`t always have a partner or some techniques we can`t really use on a partner.`Let`s work on Chinte & do bunkai & poke each others eyes out`.. Nope don`t think so... I think that we are meant to keep up with the basic 15 & what ever others that you find useful for that stage in your life, but it is not necessary to try & excel at all 26. If that is even possible. Here is one for Kensei, seieng as how he likes Bruce Lee so much. `Absorb what is useful & discard the rest`
