There's a video of Gichin Funakoshi doing Tekki Shodan somewhere, and it really is quite different to what you see today...
I wonder why kata have changed, and whether it's been for the better...

There's a video of Gichin Funakoshi doing Tekki Shodan somewhere, and it really is quite different to what you see today... I wonder why kata have changed, and whether it's been for the better... ALex, may i, as an older friend, suggest that you get this in your head because it is a rule that you will see in action for the rest of your life - In Karate and everything else: 'The only constant thing is change'There have been many reasons why Kata have changed and in my opinion they have been both positive and negative. there is much that has been written about it - often by very long served Karateka and valid historical research bods. search around on t'internet and you will find stuff to read. I would suggest that you follow the rule of 'DO it as taught at present until I find/come upon valid reasons to change the way I do it'This applies to all of your Karate. but DO expect to change over time but make sure you only do so with very good and fully explained reasons. Do not do it because you are simply following like sheep. IN karate your mind is your greatest weapon and that also applies in how and why you hone your weapons.
