Day 1 For those of you that don't already follow Iain Abernthy's Facebook page he reposting material over the next 9 days to help you understand the Basic of Bunkai. Lesson one from yesterday:- www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmjKWsZ99ykWhat the angles mean in Kata (you are not turning to face a "new" opponent, but rather you are turning in relation to the opponent that is already in front of you) And why he thinks things are in three's. Interesting stuff. Like his Facebook page if you want to follow more.

Absolutely! I'm a great fan of Iain, although I will add his work to my overall study being careful to not follow without question.
Angles like the first move in Heian Shodan - wether it was meant to be or not - but it is drilled to beginners that you turn to block a kick from the left. This is fine for beginners or those that don't care what applications can be matched to it!
Later on when the grades go up and the mind kicks in, students may start to question why would someone kick from the side but still be a couple of feet away so that you have to step into it to block it?
The best application I like is a hand/wrist grab of their left arm, you then pull this to your left while you angle yourself away from their right hook, next step in punch/push.
Similar when you turn during inside to outer block.

being careful to not follow without question. Of course, you have to make your own mind up at the end of the day, the world would be far too boring if we all agreed :-)
