People are asking for 'private' lessons. I've been teaching martial arts for over 40 years but I've never taught privately. I always teach classes. The only times I've been one on one was when only one student showed up (happened quite a few times & a few times nobody showed up). I think I need at least one other person with me to be effective (an uki), so that I can show the student what it looks like. Does anybody give private lessons & what do think about needing another body?

Hi Tom, showing is not always the best way to learn. The person you are showing has to turn the mirror image in the head to imagine what they are doing. I find it easier to watch from behind.
Not everyone learns the same, some people just do not manage classes. Watching is OK, but the concrete reinforcement of actually doing with correction before the bad habits set in, is the next stage. If you think of it as coaching you can get stunning results. Letting them feel the technique. I tend to watch and correct, you then have to be careful that you do not over correct, if you give too much input you can destroy progress.
You also have more time to help them understand the the principle so they can correct themselves. One person I am coaching at the moment as made a measurable improvement in a week that I would expect 2 months of classes to get the same result. I use focus mitts and pads which gives them something to feel. I do a lot of one to one and it is quite different approach to classes, I find it very intense.

private classes can be tailored easier than class work. I have given a few private work outs to those that want them...they normally love the idea till they get the picture that they are the focus the whole hour. They do impact training, Kata and kihon work and we often spar for the last 20 minutes of the work out.
However, you can work with one person for a hour and they can see LEAPS and bounds of improvement or find the whole thing torture. It all depends.
