At this time I`m preparing for testing for yondan & am not sure what kata that I wiil be asked to do for my second kata, so I have been training a lot of Gankaku, Jutte & because that master Yaguchi likes the tekki`s & I have not tested with it tekki sandan. My main kata will be bassai dai, mainly because I have been told that the masters prefer using a more basic kata than one too advanced. Add in the fact that during the instructor trainee class we will be doing kanku-sho & I have been training sochin as my personal kata for sometime now & of course I cover all the heian kata, tekki shodan & nidan, the sentes kata & hangetsu with my club. So what I leading to is that it is amazing me on all the ground that gets covered in doing so. when I was doing kanku-sho last night, this was the first time for me that it felt good, I1m not saying for a minute that I`m getting good at kanku-sho, however I do believe that by doing a lot of different kata fairly regularly that my body is trying to understand some of the fundamentals better. I think that my connection, which has been pretty good, if I do say so myself, has gotten a bit more consistant. So what I`m suggesting in this long winded post, is that even though we like to learn something new, lets not forget to cover what we have already learned. They will just complement each other. It is so easy to focus on a new kata & leave some of the others behind & what I have been feeling lately tells me that that is not the best practice. I have been guilty of this practice & my body just told me to get with the program & yes learn something new, but keep what you have already & you will improve. How many of you are guilty of leaving kata behind??
