Just wanted to pick up on Paul's comment with regards to kata requirements for grading.
I completely understand your decision, as it's a no brainer to use a kata that you know inside and out, having done it for years and years. So no issue there at all.
My question is why should "the masters prefer a more basic kata"? Especially at a yondan level. I would understand up to nidan, but surely sandan upwards your karate should be beyond what is considered as basic and you are starting to evolve into what can be considered your own brand.
If one of the sentei is your tokui kata fine, but why be looked down upon if it is a more advanced kata?
The reason I say this I am in a bit of the same boat as Paul. In the next 18 months I am looking at taking sandan, and am thinking of doing either Nijushiho or Unsu. Due to years of competition ( I know dojo kata vs competition kata is whole other discussion!) Unsu is my tokui and I really feel that it is part of me, however my concern is: am I setting myself up for a grilling due to its 'advanced' status?
The easier option would be to just do Empi ( which I have done for gradings since 2nd kyu) but its not my favourite.
My thinking is that by nidan your basics should be without question (not that there is never room for improvement! ) And further, from sandan you are starting to really development your own brand.
Am I being unrealistic?
My main kata will be bassai dai, mainly because I have been told that the masters prefer using a more basic kata than one too advanced.
