Today, my sensei said something that really did hit me really very hard. We were doing lots of circular stuff with nagashi-uke and take downs, and towards the end, he said something along the lines of the following (albeit in a Scottish accent ): "You've really got to get this soft stuff down. Slowly for now is fine, but don't be fooled into thinking that the stereotypical karate "line" fighting is going to be more effective (demonstrates kime-ing a few regular blocks with aiding sensei coming at him properly and get's, in effect, mashed). We can do stuff like this now. The shackles are off, we're free". I knew instantly he was talking about the damage that rigid organisational rules and "competition/grading preparation" had done to karate. Just thought I'd share that with you
