I had a thought not too long ago and thought I would ask what you all think: What if, before Shodan, there were only 4 grades. Personally, I think this makes sense. It would allow people to generally improve their Karate as opposed to being fixated on the colour of their belt. This could end up finally with a system in which at each grading, you could be asked anything that you have learnt since you started - including any kata learnt up to that point. I think this would help a lot, in that gradings would be made intrinsically more valuable, due to the student having to be a lot more prepared thanks to the fact that a lot more material will have been covered since the last time. You're also much more likely to get a bigger adrenaline rush considering how much more pressure there is, creating a more "realistic" environment, where any weaknesses will really show up. I haven't really thought this through, but thought I would post nonetheless Alex

I think you make an intweresting point there. It's true that any study which relies on an exam based system encourages students to become attached to the notion of achiveing a higher number etc... Whilst in truth this number or colour holds no substance and is in fact an artificial indication of a students knowledge or skill.
i would argue for a longer period of assesment as oposed to a 'freeze frame' or'snap shot' image that exams produce.
Is it true that historically the order of rank progressed from whit to brown then black?

Hi Shinzan, my understanding is historically it actually just went from white to black. You trained for many a year until competance was reached to a satisfactory level, then you achieved your black belt. Of more recent a time - yes it moved to white, brown then black and many a traditional school still do this. My school does this, however modern times now shows a coloured tag on your brown belt indicating your current grade level.

Hi Alex, hmmm i don't know. To be honest I have always looked forward to gradings. Diffenately way to belt fixated to begin with, but honestly for a newbie I don't know if this is such a bad thing. It creates bit size short term goals, each up coming grading requires you to focus on your weaknesses and refine. I'm not so belt fixated anymore and I think this just happens with time. Now all I want to do learn.......................

Hey Fleur You made it here then - welcome. I don't think the regular gradings are the problem - but i do think regimented adherence to a predetermined grading syllabus is. you should be studying everything relevant to your grade and then not know beforehand what you will be examined on. i have commented similarly elsewhere here.
