Hey all,
What is the worst performance buster for athletes? If you are teaching young athletes what is the number one performance killer...physically...and what can you do to off set the effects or counter it all together?
I was chatting with a old co-worker the other day about athletic performance and this subject came up as one of the worst things that athletes can face, especially those high end athletes who may have to cut weight for a tournament....Judo is bad for this!
Wow, I feel like steve! ;D

James - am i to be flattered or flattend? ;D With children I have particularly noticed that 'sleep deprivation' can have considerable negative effects. I am not talking purposeful abusive deprivation here - No, I mean the dep that comes from - heavy school pressures homework peer pressure evening activities COMPUTERS IN BEDROOMS resulting in late night 'kill the zombies' games with headphones on so mum and Dad don't know and the stress of puberty and all that brings poor eating habits it can accumulate and creep up on them. it can have considerable impact and sooner or later it will diminish performance both physically and thru lack of concentration. Good topic James and an important one for club Seniors to be aware of. not only SD but the things others will speak of as well.

missing sleep and stress can hinder performance, no doubt about it....but this one is even more horrible and easier to avoid....the effects of it are actually very serious and it is one of the biggest sapper of strength and energy, it effects them phsyically ....and it is one of the biggest killers of people in athletics today!

didn't realise it was a quiz are you speaking of dehydration? Give that man a...well what ever his heart can take...a pint! Here is a bit of interesting science for you, even minor dehydration can drop performace ability by a significant amount. And it leads to nasty things and those that cut alot of weight, like wrestlers and Judo guys have been know to rehydrate with sports drinks but suddenly change diets after they weight in and eat a carb loaded meal...leading to what we call "dumping syndrome" and major dehydration. For those that are teacing and or coaching young athletes make sure to rehydrate them after and during work outs and make sure they drink the right blends of water and sport drink after hard work outs. Us old goats can benefit from this as well!

good advice young sir and all be warned dehydration can cause heart attacks and having had one I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM! They hurt like nothing i have ever experienced - a full on kick in the nuts is a walk in the park in comparison. And to prove my understanding of looking after your heart I'll have a pint of Guinness with .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. Two More Please I do miss Guinness BooHoo!

With kids, sometimes other kids can be the problem. One kid who doesn't particularly want to be there, can destroy the lesson for half a dozen who do.
