Hi, I'm just curious. How many adult females do you have in you club - roughly?
In my club we have 19 males and 2 females.
Just being noisy....

as you will be aware Fleur the student numbers in the vast majority of Dojo has diminished considerably over recent yrs. but in my experience the gender ratio has remained about the same and hovers around the 10 percent mark (slightly higher in children's classes) average. i see this echoed where ever i go and also on courses.
your dojo seems to be near that average. it (obviously) will differ from Dojo to Dojo but rarely by a wide margin and when it does differ it tends to do so as a diminishing of that percentage rather than a rise unfortunately.
in the 70's and 80's the number of females was indeed higher but the number of males also was but the averages were about the same and hovered around the ten percent mark = out of 100 students 10 would be female - wheras now if 20 students 2 will be females (as an average).
these figures are for the UK in my experience, i am sure others can tell you how tis in there country
hope it helps with your question Fleur.

The dojo that I train at typically has around 16-20 training regularly, 4 of which are female members. This is a little higher than Steve's average but I suspect that one reason may be that the senior instructor at this dojo IS female which may (in some perceived way) make the dojo appear more female friendly. Although some have come and gone, thinking back over my time with them the ratio has typically always been around 20-25%.
At my own dojo this time last year I had 4 female students out of around 12, I now have only one out of around 15. Just in the process of trying to get a second dojo off the ground, I have had a number of inquiries but so far all male.

as i stated bob my figures are averages - you have 4 but two of our Dojo have none at all so on average i think i am near the mark.
VERY BEST OF SUCCESS with your new Dojo mate - i hope it goes very well for you.

In B.C. here we would be close to Bob`s 20-25%. In my dojo there are 10 of us 4 are females. A whopping 40%. Does that make me better looking than Andrew? ;D Osu Paul B

I do female only personal protection courses does that make me handsome or is it considered cosmetic surgery! Back to the thread - one thing i will say - every female black belt I have trained have had tremendous spirit and pay far more attention to detail than the guys tend to. also brilliant at helping organise things and adding a sense of team to the group - is it that right brain/left brain thingy? have always felt very proud of them and think the attitude 'women shouldn't study MA' is wrong and ill informed.

Is that the kind of surgery you've been talking about elsewhere? I agree with the womany stuff you're talking about. Learned most of my Goju kata (and a few shotokan) from Sheila Cook. As an ex-boss used to say "Beware of females they are the most dangerous of any speices"

out of 40 members we have 3 adult females.(2 white belts and 1 blue belt). The blue belt female is technically not that strong but she fights like a tiger and you better look after your "gedan area" cos she could hit you there as well ......by accident offcourse :-p

Guy - i say this from a paradigm of experience having been married to the 'most loving Mother of her children' i have ever known. if anyone EVER whilst i was there threatened the safety of my children (we all have nightmares about the 'what if i wasn't there' scenario) I KNOW i would dive in and endure any pain, anything to protect them and i KNOW i would be viscious with what i would do to them.. BUT... I know i would have to be climbing over my wife whom would be ripping pieces of them with no concern for herself! My wife studied karate til this thing came along and she went - mmm more important - twas our first child! Women are an asset to karate - they teach us so much = nuff said IMHO!
