Last night, we were going through Heian Sandan when a query came up. In the last movements (The Empi / punch in Kiba Dachi then repeating on the opposite side with Yori - Ashi), what position should the upper fist be in - vertical position, or normal punching postion or twisting in 45 degrees ? JKA method please ! "Best Karate number 5" is a little indistict. Thanks !

I asked this same question just recently when training with Sensei Cathy Cline 7th dan ISKF. When I first started training we did the verticle fist method. Years ago when we became the JKAWF, we switched to the horizontal, same as punch method. So I had asked the question as we are now strickly ISKF. What we are doing is staying with the JKA version that we had gone to when it became WF. The horizontal. However, you might notice that shoulder extends a bit easier with the verticle fist method. Some of these fine points are more important for teaching a group, to maintain consistancy, however you individual form might show either method, or as you mentioned the 45% method. In that case it wouldn`t be wrong, but with a slight change, the application might also change. Osu Paul B

Andy - you will find little differences even within the JKA but you are in a blessed position if you want the original JKA version as taught by the four musketeers (Kanazawa, Enoeda, Shirai and Kase Sensei's) when they first arrived in Europe = simply ask your Instructor Frank Cope Sensei as you cannot find anyone with more direct knowledge.
I think he will say 45%
