I am taking this argument/discussion from another tread because I feer the other thread was so far derailed that it does not even look like the original.
My point that I was making over on the Kata thread is that we seem to have two different kinds of Karate seniors in Karate now adays. We have the Passionet practitioner and the Egomaniac Theorists.
The Practitioner is someone that straps on Gi and obi and for better or worse goes out and trains and teaches. They do their Kata and find partners for Kumite, spend hours on Kihon and while they find new ways to think about Karate, they do it as well. Some like Senior Hyland are physically limited in what he does, but he still teaches and straps on belt(s) and Gi and waddles his broken arse out to the floor for lessons to be given. While he has some physical injuries that limit his movement and surely lead to hours of pain meds and perhaps a wet nurse(note I mean beer) he gets out and he pushes himself just a bit more than any intellegent and well ballanced person would...basically he is like most of us and does things our spouses see as silly and weird! ;D
Their are also people like my instructor who is 70 years of age, who push themselves in classes and show that they can hang with the rest of us daily. I saw him teaching the kids class the other day and training with them, he ran with them and he did push ups, sit ups and Kata with them, still looks 20 sometimes. Laughing and having fun doing Karate! He comes out four nights a week and straps on his belt and his obi and teaches and trains with us, he shows us how to apply theory and he actually does it!
Then their are the egomaniac, bullie wanna be Karate instructors and theorists that sit behind a computer screen or march up and down the dojo floor only having put on their Gis because its the dress code, they dont have to wash them often because heaven forbid they perspire while teaching!
One such Bully runs a well known net site and has for many years, he shells out insults and bullies those that dont agree with him, uses symantics and irrelevent arguments to push his point across while ignoring the true challenges. He admits that he has stopped doing Karate for years now and even when he did he was a giant pain in the arse to those that he "worked with" and was NEVER the one who was wrong, because even if every organization and senior he trained with was against him or hated him for some reason, it was not him. My argument to him once was that he had to be right...even if it meant that 30 people were wrong over him right? He simply agreed and then booted me out of his chat site.....And everyone else who took acception to his constant and illogical arguments. Oh, and he gave up Karate because he stopped training....?
Those kind of people who sit about and intellectualize Karate, or any subject, that they do not currently participate in are silly and a waste of time, I stopped reading the guys posts a long time ago realizing he was getting more and more out of touch with the physical and most important side of Karate.
The other kind is the bully that still puts on the Gi and belt and does not train. They march about and they yelp orders and much like the intellectual they dont actually do Karate. The Command and demand respect and are often far to nervous to give it back.
Only reason that I bring this up is to have everyone take a solid look at who they train with and who they are in Karate now. Lets all keep in mind who we want to be in Karate. The guy that does Karate, or the guy that talks about Karate!
