I would like to share something that I read recently. In a book written by Master Kanazawa ( Karate Fighting Techniques ) he wites about `OSS`. This is what he writes; In Japanese `Oss` is written using two Chinese characters, one meaning to `push`& the other to `endure`. The first character conveys a forward-looking attitude & fighting spirit, a willingness to always push forward, regardless of circumstances. The second character conveys the idea that, through perseverance, any obstacle or set-back, no matter how formidable, can be overcome. When I first read this, I immediately thought of Kim Watt & her courageous fight over cancer & the fact that she is not willing to give up. Also along with her fighting spirit is an exhibition of a wonderful character, who in my observation, even though she has every right to, doesn`t complain or seek pity. I must admit to feeling a warmness in my heart as I was thinking of Kim while reading this. So in honour of someone who is a fine example of someone is pushing on & enduring what life is dishing out; `OSS` to Kim Watt, we should all be so strong.

To me there is no expression that shows stronger spirit that a loud OSS forced from the gut. I remember when was a beginner in class our sensei asked after an exausting half hour of mae geri , if we could do another 5 mins. Our class sempei (a Nidan) let out an OSS!!! from deep withen his gut. he meant it. I was inspired by this and have never forgotten that moment when I knew I was going to learn something wonderful and how I wanted to be like him. I feel bad for students that train in a place where this expression of strong spirit can't be or is not used.

Great word!!!! OSS
Your problems are only as big as you make them. They can seem like a ripple, or a tidal wave. But your always the only one who creates it.

Karate, is composed of five hundred years ago the ancient martial art and China into Japan's boxing blend into. Then, in the sulfur ball upper class, secretly reference Chinese boxing created unique tang hand, namely the first 'Karate. But before the 'Tang' of the hand, there has been 'hands' and' shuri-te 'two names based on geographical respectively, become a source of modern karate schools

Actually it is written osu not oss. Oss is just a bad Western pronunciation of 'osu.' On another note it isn't even a karate term. Well it is now but it's pretty much a Japanese thing not originally having anything to do with karate and definitely not on Okinawa or Okinawan karate. It is more or less a kids thing and I believe it comes from sports. Actually I think many Japanese find it disrespectful. It may be kind of akin to a YO! in America on some levels. I think the proper thing to say to give affirmation in a dojo is "hai" I don't use osu.
