Hi, been lurking on the forum for a while, thought it was about time I said hello. My background is in Wado Ryu (as a teenager) and more recently Shotokan. Achieved 1st Kyu in both styles, but after getting a little bored stamping up and down doing Kihon and kicking air (and developing Bursitis in the process!) I'm now training in Freestyle Kenpo Karate/Kickboxing which involves fitness, pad work, weapons and 'realistic' self defence I must say its the most fun I've had in Martial Arts over the years

Welcome to the forum, I take it Bursitis is a joint complaint from punching air? Did your Shotokan club do too much Kihon, in an ideal world it would involve a balance of the 3 K's and include pad word and sparring - unless you enjoy the Kumite the most. I will put my neck out a bit (as i'm a fresh Shodan) that realistic self defence is very much included in Karate, it just needs applying more in the training. I did a short course on Kata Bunkai at the weekend which really helped to expand my knowledge on the applications of some of those funny moves in Kata.

The cause of the bursitis is difficult to pin down really, it could be any number of different things. I have issues with my knees that make holding front stance difficult and back stance pretty much impossible (without extreme pain in the knee joint). I would probably say all of my experiences with Karate (which in total is about 8 years combined) have been lots of Kihon, a bit of Kumite - mainly 5/3/1 step & pre-arranged sparring, very little free sparring tiny amount of pad work and very little work on kata applications, more a form over function approach to kata practise. On the self defence front I would say that I've never really done anything in Karate that I would term 'Self Defense'. 1 step against a reverse punch or lunge punch is not real defense, learning to deal with a haymaker or a lapel grab is imo. Don't get me wrong, I'm not anti-karate, its just I think nowadays I'm looking for something a little different to kicking and punching air, for the sake of both my joints and my sanity!

Welcome aboard! You make it what you want! I like punching & kicking people best of all! I even like it when they punch & kick back - like me & Miguel tonite! Thanks, Tom PS - do some defense against guns, knives & clubs it's great fun!

Welcome Barry - Whilst Glad that you have found some MA training that you enjoy, I am also saddened (but not totally surprised, that you did not find a Shotokan Club that fulfilled your requirements - they do exist but maybe tis a location situation for you. However, please join in here and enjoy - you are most welcome
