Having just gone through the new child protection verification how does the board feel about the new child/vunerable aduts protection policies and how it affects our clubs. We have had issues with the rules governing who can/cannot train with the club over the past few years and this resulted in us leaving one governing body after 30+ years membership.
For example we had to remove someone from the club who had a serious criminal record because of the new laws but our old association felt different.
How do you guys (British based) deal with the new rules?

I'm not sure what the new rules are so just replying as a point of view.... I've recently done mine and hold an enhanced CRB which is clear, as a checking process all this tells the Club and it's students is that i haven't done anything bad in the past or been investigated/prosecuted. If the club has good Child/data/funds etc policies in place then that should help safeguard against any potential problems and also not put the Instructors in positions of risk or temptation.
The biggest question from what you've said is "Does the club want anyone teaching that has a criminal conviction" closely followed by are the students/parents happy with this? I'm assuming the criminal record wasn't related to sex, abuse or violence? I dare say that you will get a few instructors who have records but are very good instructors/people so would feel annoyed at being excluded from teaching, although the rules are there to protect the Students they shouldn't prevent the club from teaching Karate.
I guess if we were faced with a new instructor to our club and they had a record then we would have to assess the case and the crime, the nature of the crime, and the time elapsed since. It would be a difficult problem if we were happy but our Gov body wasn't.

Malk in Scptland no one is allowed to teach kids who has a criminal record involving sex offences, violence or drugs, the members was convicted for dealing class A drugs and the implementation of the new vunerable adults and child policies meant we had to ask him to leave. Now up here even parents attending the club or using their cars must be checked out.

I think the same applies here for anyone volunteering and in contact or supervision of children in any situation, in most cases its a bit too much to ask and some volunteers have stopped, on the other side though, even if it prevented 1 bad incident then maybe it was worth it.
On the face of it then your situation doesn't sound good, technically you are placing unsuspecting children in the care of a drug dealer..... As a parent then I might be a bit annoyed if I dropped my kid off at a sporting event and found out the coach had a drugs conviction, its not the sort of thing you would ask but you expect anyone in charge to be checked out.
I'm guessing that your guy isn't bad or it was some time ago and i'm sorry if I sound a bit harsh.
