We all know how the 3 K's are taught to us since the introduction of Karate to the general population. Any views on the order of Kata and Kihon when "Karate" was formulated? Kumite is in there somewhere throughout the evolution of Karate.
For example were the Kihon practiced as individual techniques and put together as Kata and the introduction of bunkai followed or did the kata and Bunkai already exist and the individual Kihon extracted from Kata and expanded upon?
Bit like the alphabet and the word, which came first?

I believe Kumite came first as the Kata were formed from lots of 2 man drills and created so you could remember them, a bit like putting several bits of information into a song. Not sure when Kihon came about, may have been added later to form good techniques from the Kata?

Agreed, Mal. I think that "air kihon" came when large classes came about. Individualized training the the back yard probably was a lot more partner based.
