This came up in another forum and so I thought I'd post my thoughts here. Eventually I'll work my way through the whole kata and post the sections here. Mind you, like most bunkai, these are just my ideas and how I envision the opponent as I perform the kata. Thoughts and critiques are welcome.
Here are my thoughts for what I envision the first couple moves could be assuming opponent is in a left front facing.
1. Right hand deflects opponent's left lead hand while left hand comes up and under to collect and pull up over head. Right hand continues down and in striking the groin while right stepping inside opponent's stance coupled with the left hand pull taking their balance.
2. Left hand punch to the ribs while right hand covers under for potential right handed counter by opponent. While left stepping in, left hand grabs and pulls opponent forward and right hand strikes the throat or neck. Double punch to the face to finish.
3. Left hand goes across the neck and right hand to the waist or leg to throw opponent across the left leg.
Thoughts?

Personally, I really struggle with this kata from a bunkai point of view...
I am not totally sure of the history, but I believe that the Shotokan Sochin was an adaption by Gigo Funakoshi and may be more about deep stance and expansive movement rather than self defence application and strategic implications. Not unlike the junro kata's (in terms of the fact that those were about improving relaxation and removing stiffness).
That being said the opening moves are not dissimilar to some of the moves in Tekki Shodan all be it with a longer stance and more expansive movements..

I've not looked into this one yet but always assumed that slow movements are all about grappling/controlling an aggressor.
I would have thought that the opening move would be to block high right while grabbing low left then slowly pulling up a leg with the left arm while maybe pulling an opponents arm/head down - maybe their right arm across their body?
Second maybe either a slow push back or twisting pull push, followed by 2 punches.
Still lots of thought needed.... Again different applications for different attackers.

Okay, I am not a Sochin guy, I am a Nijushiho, Meikyo and Kanku Dai Guy...but I am a history buff and have written about it many times.
Tom is right, the Kata was actaully created more or less by Gigo when the original group (Pre JKA) went to Mabuni to learn Katas when Funakoshi sent them on the exchange.....they got Kata and they taught the new Kumite stuff to them.
Gigo did not like the Sochin that was being taught at all, and one account stated that he was less than silent about it....however, he loved the name. He then proceeded to take the name and put it on a Kata he was working on. I have read that he took a few techniques here and their to add to his Kata and I have also read that he basically stole the whole Kata and did not borrow any of it...any similarity is happenstance.
Having watched Shito ryus version a few times, I tend to think he took NOTHING from that styles version less the name.
as for the Bunkai, I can think of a few ideas that may explain the movements...but having just said it was created by Gigo...I tend to think its as basic as it gets. Not by any means insulting Gigo Funakoshi...he was however more focused on the fighting and techniques in pure form (read kicky, punchy stuff)and perfection of form...This tends to make me think that he is not creating any hidden meanings in Kata nor is he hidding great ideas that you have to look for! They simply are what they are.
Hope that helps in your personal journey of discovery with Sochin.

...everything he said. It is annoying though because it is a really nice kata to perform...
