hi all, after reading a suggestion that everyone should start a thread, i thought thats a good idea! so i would like to know what everybodys most favourite technique is? now i realise that this is head scratcher, and most will have several "favourite techniques" so to clarify, we can have 2 answers, and im just interested to see if there are similarities between you all. 1, the technique that YOU believe you are most acomplished at, that when executed at your full potential would cause the most impact/damage/devastation? and 2, the technique that when in the dojo and sensei says,... tonight were gonna spend half an hour on our? ? and you think...Yes! i love working on that!

Hi Gaz, that is a good question, but you may be should have asked what your favourite technique is at every range, close, mid and long distances, just to make it a bit more interesting, sorry for adding my bit!!

Long range would be mae-geri, mid range gyaku tsuki and close would be empi.

The "tokui-waza" concept is interesting from what it implies about one's karate and why one pursues it. But that aside, I think one should conceive of it not as a single strike or a single weapon, but instead as a "complete" technique - with fake, lead-in, main, follow, and cover-out segments, generally on the advancing attack. At any rate, that is the way Nishiyama sensei taught us the concept back in the late 60's.

(with a nod towards Elmar's suggestion) for me it is Shuto...
... as an opener, a clearer of limbs, a breaker of grip, a de-balancer, a controllingator, a domintator and a finisherator...
(apologies as most of this mail wasn't written in English)

My favorite techniques reflect my root sparring techniques. I am a bit of a bull in a china shop and blast straight into people when sparring. I like to blitz with punching, Gyaku zuki-Kizami-Gyaku zuki- Oi zuki and plow headlong through the target For kicking its Mae geri! Again, set it up with a jab or a reverse punch attack to se the target on their heels and then go right through them.

If I had to have a favorite technique I'm afraid I'm going to be really boring and predictable and go for Gyaku Tsuki. It's the one technique I really like to break right down to it's component parts and practice the fundamentals of over and over again (never get bored with this, it just 'feels' like Karate in a nutshell).
However, my default technique of choice for "point scoring" kumite seems to be Uraken Uchi, this one just seems to work for me.

Having paid attention last night during kumite it would appear I also seem to favour jodan tate tzuki.

theres nothing boring about gyaka tzuki! i love to relax my body and breathing then lunge forward while trying to focus on not tensing my arms, until the that final kime moment, then Pow!! that is definitely my mid range, long range has to be yoko geri kikomi, for a similar reason, although i used to prefer ushiro geri when i was younger, for short range i dont even know the name but its basically a knee thrust. on another note, what is anyones most frustrating technique? ? where you just dont feel confident in the power??
