Apart from learning the Japanese names for it all I sometimes refer to Karate as learning a new language.
First off you learn some words, then build up to simple sentences, eventually long phrases. Another part of this is reading poetry to help you link words together and perfect their pronunciation. You will also ask and answer questions which will eventually lead to full conversations.
After practicing for a few years you should have a good grasp of the language and be able to hold your own when engaging someone with the native tongue, but there will always be more to learn!
