The bit in Bassai Dai after the Shuto's where you twist/grab the attackers hand and pull it towards you whilst launching a Kekomi at their legs, I think that another applications for your hands could be holding onto your Fish and Chips whilst dealing with 4 muggers....

It's good when you see people fighting back but on a serious note he was stabbed and could have died for the contents of his wallet and a phone, although there are no gaurantees they still won't beat you after taking your stuff.
Luckily for him he won the day and had done some Aikido.
