We were working on Jion yesterday and i found it a smoother kata than Bassai Dai. This is personal feeling but in Jion it seemed to be more practical for application not all of it but in certain aspects. I think this is due to their being no kicks in it and me being mr inflexible how do others feel about this kata

You sure it was That kata Derek, because there are 2 mae-geri kicks in Jion.

Yes Ian I should have been clearer I meant no hard kicks like in Bassai Dai with the crescent kick to the hand (my stiffness allows a mae geri sorry for confusion)

I found it difficult to learn, partly due to it being a long Kata. If practiced with similar power and speed then it's just as much hard work as Bassai Dai. It does have a nice layout though and has a similar "I" shape to the Heian Kata, also a few of the moves using the same technique. Practical applications are probably similarly matched, just different techniques, think of Bassai Dai as having NO blocks.... Even though they are called blocks. I really like the long Kiai at the end, especially when done by someone like Enoeda Sensei.

Malk I find them all difficult so Jion is no different but I have found it to be more fluent for my body style. I am just learning it and no doubt my mind will change when I progress to another of the 1st Dan kata's.
Interesting you mention the long Kai at the end our sensei explained that we did this with the SKI but with the JKS it is a shorter Kai. She showed both and as a novice it doesn't appear to change the dynamics too much but again for others in our club they have mixed views.

We do the Kiai both ways. I dont know what is worse....doing it both ways...or not knowing which way to do it.....

We do a short, sharp kiai (JKA method)
