I am being serious now - could somebody explain this to me. I am aware that this 'creative Kata' stuff has been around for a long time but i just don't get it. How is it Judged? how do you know if he/she has made a mistake? what is it's martial value? Sorry - despite my strong belief that MA's MUST continue to develop - I just don't get this www.youtube.com/watch?v=unhyn_8LAFw&feature=related

I think the judges need to be a good mix of figure skating judges, Dance judges and gymnastic judges....no TMA Judges need apply! I never got it as well, but what ever...it may bring a student or two in and then we can educate them in real Karate!

here is a "traditional" guy trying to do a "newer" Kata....scarry stuff if this is what people think we do...and DAMN is it bad!
and same Kata done with out the horrible cat calls and squirl screams...not as scary...still a strange Kata...but not to bad.
It is not just the "new age" Performance Katas that make us look bad! but they sure dont help!

Absolutely pathetic. Crap like this really makes me angry. That fella screeching like a banshee with his nether regions caught in his zip. He was wearing a watch ! Garbage which has no meaning or, IMO, merit

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I'm pretty sure that Go Pai Sho is actually a joke kata - ie it was made for a laugh Here's where I first came across it: 4 Evil (And Fun) Karate Pranks For April 1st (and yup, they are brilliant XD) www.karatebyjesse.com/?p=3764

whilst i have often found karate to be fun and have also often laughed in a Dojo - i believe tempered humour has an important part in teaching strategies but i have never felt karate was a 'joke' or to be used to betray trusting students for a joke. maybe i am old school but Karate is very precious to me - it has saved my life and helped me protect loved ones and that aint a 'joke'. perhaps others may feel differently but they aren't studying the karate i have been studying for over 4 decades. sad sad sad

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I'm pretty sure that Go Pai Sho is actually a joke kata - ie it was made for a laugh Here's where I first came across it: If only it was a joke! It is a Shuri ryu kata created by the instructor that made up that style, Robert Trais in 1946. Apparently he created the Kata based on what he learned from a master or two that he apparently trained with. Jury is still out on the history but the two guys I met that do the style are not bad at fighting!!! The unfortunatly part is that some jokers (read sorry ass people) take this styles Katas and make them look like this. the originals are not great in my mind (only my thoughts here people) but the short Gi wearing duffus that is doing this kata just makes the whole style look silly.

the thing is James it exists within what many people claim to be 'traditional Shotokan'
but the thing is
KNOWLEDGE EMPOWERS - INITIATING CHANGE!
and i genuinely believe that there is a wave of change occuring as many of us reach an age that facilitates deeper thought and reflection and are trying to get the 'word' out there.
I also believe that sites like this can produce huge benefits via a process of information, debate and reflection (Hail Dod Liam and Kim!)
as stated elsewhere, we in the UK are very fortunate that we have a wealth of knowledge here that is accessible. you'll notice that the enlightened run OPEN courses which are becoming very well attended.
The friendship courses hit there third year this year and they have been such a joy for me to put on. we regularly have 7 or more different Shotokan Organisations attending and it is never even discuss. my proudest thing has been that in three short days the group bond and many have told me 'it feels like a club that have trained together for years. Many have become friends that communicate regularly and visit each other - marvellous IMHO
ther eis Hope - I know it for sure!

I think you're totally right Steve - I think that Karate's dark ages of McDojo and pure "sport Karate" are coming to a close; but it really is all thanks to people like you Steve who have stayed true to what Karate really is all about, and spreading your wealth of information amongst those of us that aspire to one day hold a level as skill like yours, through sites like this, your upcoming book, your countless articles for magazines, your friendship courses and so on ooh, I almost forgot to tell you either here or elsewhere: I've been offered quite a tempting place at York University next year, which I might just be inclined to accept So maybe a number of the "people that I felt like I had trained together for years with" will actually become my fellow club members after all
