Today both my daughter and I grade for 1st Kyu. Whilst I am confident we have put the work in over the years to reach this stage and level in our Karate I am still bricking it and have been up for hours.

You've probably already done it now but just try and relax and enjoy the day, you've put in the work and can't do any more than your best. Anyway, good luck (even if it is a bit late )

We both passed Emma was comlimented on her Karate but mines was ropey as I took a mind blank during Bassai Dai before the last shuto movement. Now I have a minimum of 9 months to try to get to the level where I can try to attain my Shodan. To be honest I am in no rush.
The course before the grading was teken by Yamaguchi Sensei who is a 7th Dan JKS Japan honbu dojo instructor training graduate. his skill speed and teaching style was awsome even better than the last time we trained with him in 2011.

Well done to both of you!
Don't worry about ropy or mind blanks, all part of the fun. Keep training well and you will get to Shodan when ready.

I never had issues with the Kata, I blanked during Jutte on my Sandan test and just kind of floated though it. Its always been my Kumite that I get heck for.
First time going for Shodan I nailed a guy so hard he could not continue, then the next time I let a guy run me over all the time afraid of hitting the big bull! I got 6 month retests on both...then my last test I just gave it and tried to not hit the guy to hard, and it was a KILLER test. my instructor put us through our paces and blasted the hell out of us. I passed on the third try. My instructor said Kata was always great, Kumite I tend to get a bit agressive and he wanted to bash that out of me and make me fight smart...Hey that was 20 years ago..I hope I have grown!
Dont worry Derek, relax, enjoy and listen to your instructor...they will guide you into Shodan!

Thanks guys Tom funny I was talking to a lad I was at school with at the grading who was thinking of taking up Karate. His daughter was already training and he asked me how hard it was to train with Emma. I love the feeling of being close to her through training and the fact I still do a sport with her. I took up Karate because she wanted me to train with her and its the best feeling ever.
