I have informed the class that next week will be a no gi night. I intend to have them kitted out in headguards, mitts, body armour and shin pads, along with gumshields and groin guards for part of the session and will devise various scenarios and situations for them to cope with and defend themselves from. I intend it to be as realistic as role play allows and have done this previously with great success. However this is a mixed group and I will have to split the group according to age. I am struggling to think of drills for the younger members apart from disengagement exercises and escaping to "safe zones". Any suggestions? For the seniors, role play will include 1on1, 2on1, nominating bystanders who will put the boot in if given the opportunity, mates who will abandon you at the first hint of bother. Misdirection, restricted areas to limit movement and the inclusion of some weapons including a "Louisville Slugger" wrapped in bubblewrap. Supervision will be tight and briefing extensive. Anything else I should consider?

How old are the young ones? If they are really young the lesson could be about having fun with protective gear and learning to use the equipment?

Understandably you seem to have drills which view violence from a male perspective, but I am sure like most Karate clubs you have female students. Women are less likely to end up in a street or pub brawl, women are subject to very different types of violence, which need to be catered for as well.
Suggested drills would be working from be escaping form being strangled (The 2nd most common way for women to die as a result of violence* is being strangled at home by husband/boyfriend/ex lover).
Would also suggest you role-play someone following them in the street (late at night). Have someone approach them under the pretence of asking for the time or "a light". Have them use their fence (or whatever name your give it in your club) and keep them at distance and warn them off, but have attacker keep pressing forward so they can practice pre-emptive striking and escape.
Would also work on fighting if things end up on the ground. Useful for the guys if they do end up there (we never want to, but it can't always be avoided) and also for the women as rapists don't tend to work standing up.
*at least according to UK crime statistics, appreciate not everyone is in the UK.
Can't suggest anything for the kids though, someone else will have to help yo with that one :-)
Hope it goes well, let us know what happens.

Younger members are 10 to 15 Tom. Pretty much what I had in mind. Paul, we don't have any female adults currently training hence the reason I omitted the feminine perspective. Thanks for other suggestions I will ponder them further. The lads are used to ground work so I expect that to kick in even under pressure.

I would include the young ones in a playground fight scenario, the usual crowd baying and also a gang jumping scenario both very common around here and weekly occurrence. Getting them used to the noise covering up and the short fight is essential and something I think a lot karate-ka don't train for.

Most men are attacked with a punch. Most women are subjected to grabbing attacks. We also do a 5 second drill whereby the victim must get up within 5 seconds under a multiple attacker situation. Hope that helps.
