Hi all just a quick question may have been asked before, which is best when buying a black belt cotton, satin or silk I know what the pros and cons are of each one, but just wanted some feedback on your personal experiences.

I have a cotton one. It cost 35p from the local sports shop. It is still black so is hard wearing.
Having said that I only want to learn empty hand fighting and I didn't have much money and no one ever talked about belts.
So get a silk one with some letters on it you worked hard and it represents something to you, do not be a boring old fart like me.

Hi Rob, Depends what you want from a belt really. Silk (or satin if you want lower cost) will give you that frayed and "lived in" look a lot quicker than a plain heavy cotton belt. My current cotton belt is about 12 years old and doesn't really show much sign of wear, it's a bit grey around the edges (much like myself) but other than that looks much as it did when I bought it, we have other black belts in our group who went down the satin route who's belts are already well worn and white around the edges after only 2-3 years (I suspect mine was a fraction of the price as well ). So if you want to look like you've been a black belt for years very quickly then silk/satin, if you want cheap and functional then cotton. I'm sure there are other reason that I've not thought of only ever having been a cotton belt wearer that others may be able to shed light on so this is just my take. My personal take is I'd rather be underestimated because of the way my belt looks than overestimated, but that may be just me. Cheers

Personally I would go for silk, there is something rather nice about a lived-in silk belt. As Bob says they can wear quite quickly (but you are talking the best part of a decade before it starts looking worn).
Mine is now looking very sad indeed (it is over 20 years old) but I keep putting off getting a new one, not sure why, other than I have grown rather attached to the old belt and I have an irrational fear that I will buy the wrong type...or something....and maybe lose all my karate-powers!

I have a satin belt, a cotton belt and a silk belt. I never wear the silk one because its a present from a dear instructor and a keep sake, my satin one is around the waist of a Kohai and my Cotton one is solid and all I need! I think the "worn look" is great, but I also think that cheating and buying one that quickly looks worn is silly. Take the cotton one and bust it with good hard work outs.

I'm a traditionalist. I use black suspenders instead of a belt.

You have raised something there....and it may be a "lost in translation" thing.. as I am not sure if the US and the UK use the terms "satin" and "silk" to mean the same things.
..I associate Satin with Bed sheets and mirrored ceilings .. more bordello than bunkai really..

Lol, in Canada we refer to Silk weave or Satin weave. The Satin, while traditionally can be silk is normally nylon or polyester when we talk about Satin.
The difference therefore in a silk or satin belt is the material to give you the shinny belt look.
And thus ends the geeky lesson!

Hi all, New to the site I was wondering if anyone can advise the best place to purchase an embroidered silk (or satin) black belt? It's a gift for my wife who will be going for Nidan at the October JKA Gashuku down in Dunfermline. Any help welcomed! Thanks

I got mine from kamae back in 2007, it's a cotton belt and has been great. Was tempted to buy silk but thought the price difference too much.

Talk about "lost in translation", I haven't quite got over the idea of Nathanso in black suspenders!! Our colonial friends should remember suspenders means something else over here!

An example of our use of the term can be found here (although I'm not one to judge )
